Post Treatment Lightning Maroon

I promised photos, and I took them. I ended up not doing any subsequent antibiotic treatments, so I basically ran one day longer with the Maracyn SW than called for, and Maracyn II went the full course. I didn’t have a very cooperative photograph subject, but these photos of the Lightning Maroon were take on Thurdsay, May 3rd, 2012.

You can see the difference in the right upper maxilary…certainly scarred at this point, but not the raging infection. And the appetite returned. Plus, on Friday, the Lightning Maroon saw fit to go on a rampage of the sandbed, moving Goniopora and other corals around that had been left alone for months.

Great news! Never ceases to amaze me how well fish can over come disease and injury with good husbandry. Couple questions though, what happened to the eggs? Also It is more then likely an optical illusion but is her left eye enlarged? Glad to see her rampaging around the tank. Keep up the good work.

  When she had the mild case of pop-eye, it was actually her right eye (same side as the mouth rot). I think in that picture, it’s just that she is looking upwards with her left eye, so it’s upturned. The Onyx Perc eggs they were tending did hatch. The onyx have not yet laid their next nest, but I don’t know that I’ll steal it from them again. May have to ask a few people for their opinions on whether to double down again, or to wait.

what varieties of foods you feed it?

  The main foods right now include Spectrum Thera A pellets, Rod’s Food, and various frozen mysis and brine shrimp (eg: Hikari Spirulina-enriched brine, PE Mysis).

This may be a stupid question. As I understand it aiptasia are a form of anemone and maroons are anemone fish. What is the connection between the infection and the aiptasia? While I understand that science is still out on how the symbiotic relationship is formed and how, it would stand to reason that a anemone is an anemone and maroons should be able to deal with the poison the way they would with any other nem.

  Well, I think first you’re misunderstanding that the above is purely speculation / thinking out loud. I’m definitely NOT stating that there is a connection between aiptasia and the infection. Now, that disclaimer stated…
  My thought process is this. Aiptasia are NOT a natural host for a Maroon Clownfish..not even close. We also do know that you can’t just take a clownfish and put it into ANY anemone and expect it to be OK…that’s now how clownfish “protection” works. It’s thought that the protection has to do with the slime coat masking the anemonefish, and thus not causing the nematocysts to be triggered. Thus, you don’t see the clownfish getting stung by the anemone; eg. you can have a really sticky carpet anemone and touch it…it feels “sticky” because it’s actively stinging you. Clownfish don’t get “stuck” to their hosts.
  But once the slime coat, the “cloak” if you will, is compromised, you better believe that fish can get stung. And that while perhaps they are resistant, I wouldn’t go so far as to say that a clownfish is necessarily immune to the toxins in an anemone’s sting.
  So when watching the Lightning Maroon trucking around the “Aiptasia patch”, I noticed that the tentacles of the Aiptasia were sticking to the infected area of the mouth. Clearly, being stung. While it may not outright KILL the clownfish, it certainly could be causing discomfort or otherwise aggravating the site of the infection…you know, like picking at an open wound and dipping it in a mild acid or salt…not fun.
  So that’s the thought process there…chances are the Aiptasia were not helping things, so I made sure to nuke some of the larger, “unavoidable” ones. Not sure it really did anything, as there are places where the Lightning Maroon will just bed down in Aiptasia without a care. I don’t like it, and I it’s getting me thinking I want to do something about it, but the clownfish normally doesn’t seem to mind one bit.

Mr.Pederson, I love the photos of your beautiful Lightning Clown.I really like the one,s I think you shot yourself. I was wondering if you would allow me to use your one of your pictures for my avatar. I love the first picture at the top of this post. I would not think of using a picture without permission and I will truly understand if you rather I did not. I’m new to keeping marine fish and corals and I’ve studied a lot before jumping into this endeavor. I will never have the opportunity to own one of these, however soon I will have a beautiful pair of maroons, which I will love and be just as proud of. I enjoy watching them so very much. Thank goodness a family like yours is gifted with such a beautiful specimen. Thanks for sharing this wonderful gift with all the world, as you know many people would keep this locked away so all of us would only wonder and wish to see and enjoy. Thanks
