Remarks:
This is a fish that, were it any other fish, in any other setting, it would be culled / euthanized.  But from a genetics preservation standpoint, it hasn’t been culled (anything worse than this fish was automatically culled, regardless if it was a Lightning.)  The worst fish in the group still alive, here’s the issues.  Both ventrals are basically missing, having long since been presumably damaged in fighting and since atrophied.  The first dorsal spine is not connected to the rest of the dorsal and based on other fish with similar issues, never will be.  And then there’s the issue of the lower jaw.  Is it a gill deformity?  A tumor?  I frankly have NO CLUE.
Again, ordinarily, this fish would be destroyed.  But…it’s a Lightning Maroon.  I think it’s fair to speculate that the ventral and dorsal issues are most likely aggression / rearing issues, and not genetic.  The weird flap / lump / bump / gotee?!  IDK…this fish has been a standout in pattern, and that beard has me wanting to call this fish Steve half the time.  Maybe it will live out it’s life here, or maybe it’ll go up for auction under the assumption that someone, somewhere, will still fall madly in love with this fish that has, shall we say, lots of “character”?
For sanity’s sake, I probably wouldn’t breed with this fish.  There’s better.  Just about every other fish I have is better.
